Keeping our Ocean’s Clean
Keeping our Ocean’s Clean
Everyday our oceans become more and more polluted with rubbish from across the globe. ‘The Ocean Cleanup’ is a great initiative taken too clean up our oceans. In July 2022, the project had official removed 100,000kgs of plastic from the Pacific Ocean. They had previously done studies and estimated that there was between 79,000,000–100,000,000kg of accumulated plastic.
Having a cleaner ocean allows for; clean drinking water, save marine ecosystems, limit climate change and avoid diseases. You may think to yourself, how can I help on a local scale?
The Antrim and Newtownabbey Council has 385 volunteers across 20 Adopted Spots. Last year’s Big Beach Clean saw more than 304 volunteers take part in Northern Ireland during Big Beach Clean Weekend and collected 803kg of waste. This prevents that massive amount of waste from evenm entering the ocean in the first place.
If this is something that interests you there is a way to volunteer, through www.liveherelovehere.org.
