 Next Play Speed

In sport ‘Next Play Speed’ can be the difference between winning and losing, but what is its relevance?

Training your mind to re–focus in the face of adversity is perhaps one of the most challenging things to do as a human being. There are multiple examples of this in Sport, with the most obvious being a quote from Mike Tyson, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” But this is not only applicable to sport, but everyday life. Students studying for exams can do all the work they want, and in theory this may best prepare them for an exam, but only they can control how they react whenever they encounter their first tough question. This could be the difference between a pass and a fail.

Graham Betchart is the director of mental training for Lucid Performance Inc, and he believes that when coaches and athlete’s focus on recovery time as a skill, better results will come naturally. By training your mind to react quicker and more positively to situations, you could gain the biggest advantage over anybody, and on the flip side, panicking only creates more problems. It’s like driving to work and finding out there’s traffic on your route. You have two options:

1.      Change route and do you’re best to make it in on time.

2.      Drive into the traffic and accept defeat, likely complaining the whole time.

So the next time that you feel like things aren’t going your way, how quickly will you react to change it?
